Polkadot in 2020 — By the Numbers

As 2020 comes to a close, let’s take a look at some Polkadot network and ecosystem stats from the first year of its launch.

Polkadot launched May 26, 2020, but that doesn’t mean Polkadot development has slowed. In 2020, 68,778 lines of code were added to Polkadot, and 130,226 lines of code were added to Substrate, the blockchain framework that Polkadot is built upon.

Some of that development went into the 18 on-chain runtime upgrades Polkadot saw this year, powered by Substrate’s forkless upgrade mechanism.

But of course, Polkadot is a whole ecosystem of development. There are over 900 GitHub repos tagged with Polkadot.

One of the most exciting aspects of watching the Polkadot network grow is seeing the Polkadot-ready blockchains in development. At the end of 2020 there were 100+ Polkadot-ready blockchains, with 60+ live test networks.

This development is aided by infrastructure, tooling, and integrations. In 2020, 30+ such products launched, with 60+ more in the works.

The Polkadot Treasury supports network and community development. In 2020, 23 proposals received Treasury funding, cumulatively receiving 118,465.63 DOT. At the end of 2020, the Polkadot Treasury held ~10,205,300 DOT.

And of course no snapshot of the Polkadot network would be complete without looking at staking. As of EOY 2020, there are over 550 validators and 7000 nominators, and over 60% of DOT staked.
